When I was a kid in central California, we'd sometimes fished a little pond hidden in a hollow behind the old folks' home. We had a blast catching crappie on surface poppers.
We had a little fountain and pond (about 2'x6', maybe 6 inches deep) at home that was usually green with algae and the occasional frog. Occasionally a goldfish or two would be added.
Early one spring we brought 3-4 small crappie home alive and dumped them in our little pond. After a few days or so we forgot about them.
Towards the end of fall, we were told to drain and clean the pond and fountain. Those 3-4 small crappie were gone but were somehow replaced by 2 BIG crappie.
Apparently, there were enough bugs, frogs, and such to keep 'em quite happy even in water that barely covered them.
There was a little bitty creek nearby full of tadpoles and 3 inch minnows -- and two big crappie. Some of the neighborhood kids like to catch the frogs and minnows. I always hoped someone got a great fish story out of it.
