[cool]Hey, Bro. Just a guess, but I doubt you will find fresh roe skeins anywhere on your side of the Sierra Mountains. Fresh roe is like gold to the salmon and steelhead fishermen along the coast and the commercial fishermen can make as much money selling fresh roe as they will on the salmon they catch. In fact, there are a lot of snaggers over there that snag salmon and steelhead just to get the roe and leave the fish to rot.
My guess is that you would have to find an oriental seafood market, and be prepared to pay a hefty price per pound for what they consider to be a delicacy...the fresh roe. Only right on the coast, in the busier bait shops, will you ever find fresh roe outside of a seafood market.
My personal recommendation is to go book a fishing trip out of one of the landings in Oregon or Washington, and hope you catch a couple of roe-laden female silver salmon. Their roe is the brightest orange and cures up great...with a little borax, salt and sugar.
The only fish spawning in Utah this time of year will be browns and some brookies. The macks will be on the humps at Bear Lake and the Gorge soon too.
If you fish flies, have you ever tried "glo-bugs"? These are the little round synthetic yarn ball flies that represent a single egg. They work well both for drifting down a current...or for fishing on a slow sink with a bubble. I still have a bunch of the special yarn. Used to use them a lot.
