Hit it again yesterday from 4:00 to dark, didn't do so well. Caught three fish, nothing of size, but did get a Rainbow. Nothing is on the water right now, so dry fly fishing is rough. I went early today and had much better luck. There was a hatch of HUGE caddis, at least, they looked kinda like caddis/moths, so I tied one on. I experimented with droppers and caught a few on a pheasant tail, but didn't really have any success until I put on a small (about the size of a BB) pinkish/pearl glow bug. THAT was the ticket. I caught 20+ from that point on, 10 out of the same hole over an hour stretch. Even mix of Bows and Browns and the colors were spectacular. All of the rainbows had bright orange under their gills. (cutbows?) and their under bodies were all grey/black splotches. The females were FAT and their butt-holes were all puckered out, ready to unload eggs. (I assume)
The fly is one that I tied. I used a plastic bead, red uni-thread, and one strand of small white chenille. I put the bead on, anchor the thread at the bend, tie in the chenille, secure the bead with a fex criss-cross stitches with the thread (ya, not real pro, but work with me...) and then pull the chenille over the top of the bead and secure it. Whip finish, and bam. I like the chenille because it gives it a soft/spermy look, but the bottom of the egg is solid and sleek/shiney. Great pattern.
Anyhow, had the river to myself -- again. Take a trip up there, it's great. I'll post pictures later. (phone died in the middle of the trip -- lame.)
*edit* Here are two pictures I got before my phone died.
And since someone mentioned Glass Fenwick rod... Here's a shot of my old school 8 weight, a.k.a. Carp Slaughtering Machine: (got this hog three weeks ago on an orange glow bug)
