'Ice' day on Scofield!
#7
Started out the day early. Alex, my godson, and I left Provo around 6. By the time we pulled into Scofield State Park it was -14 degrees. BRRRRRR!!!! But I promised that I would take Alex fishing for the first time for his 5th birthday. We were on the ice fishing by close to 8.

Set up the tent just south west of the docks in about 28 ft of water. Bout 10 minutes later Alex had his first fish. A good sized 14 inch bow. 15 minutes later he reeled in about the same size cutt. Then the typical I'm cold whine began. So I brought the lantern out to get the heat going. Well that was the challenge brought the lantern with no matches. Grabbed some paper and a lighter from the truck and continued to work at it. By this time the tears had started to fall. I knew it wasn't really that cold inside the tent but I knew he wouldn't last much longer if I didn't get that lantern going. Finally I found a piece of cardboard that stayed lit long enough to light the lantern. He was finally good to go. Once I got that going he was all about staying on the ice and catching fish.

After a couple fish being lost from setting the hook to getting him to reel it in we decided it could be better and moved to about 16 feet of water. Not a bite there. so we moved further out to the entrance of the East arm and found a nice spot in about 12 feet of water. Fish finder went beep and it was game on. Cutt after cutt were being pulled through the ice.

Finally saw some bigger marks towards the bottom and dropped his line down. BAM! He reeled in as far as he could and I finished. A beautiful 18 inch cutty. Big fish for the day. As you will see in the pictures nothing but big Smiles after that.

Ended the day losing count of the fish and having one tuckered out little fisherman! Only two rainbows for the day. Had to keep a little cutt because he swallowed the hook and was bleeding everywhere. Also there is a picture of a 7 inch chub that came out of the 16 inch cutt that I caught. Its always fun to see the two tips of a tail sticking out of each side of the fishes mouth.

Up till the time he fell asleep on the drive home he was telling me how much fun he had fishing and how he wanted to bring he sister with the next time we went. I think hes "hooked"! Enjoy the pics and I am sure Scofield will be a zoo tomorrow after everyone reads this post.
