"Hand powered" auger yes. The ice was 16 inches.
No we don't bring radios. Typically cell phones, radios and even ipod like devices actually throw off a beacon in search mode. To us there would be too many things to turn off when the seconds count. But yes we carry cell phones that are turned off.
Usually we stick closer together though but not enough to be caught in the same slide. I checked out the avalanche conditions personally and on the Utah Avalanche Center and felt it was safe enough to travel the way we did. Still injuries, animals, etc can always happen too so I would say it isn't always best to let your gaurd down.
