No, I don't think the wax repels enough water to affect the overall fly. I tie (and fish) a lot of soft hackles and really needed the "tackiest" wax I could find... and just wasn't happy with the commercial "fly tying" products and ran across an old article that suggested the plumbers wax ring and it worked out great. I've used nothing else ever since.
I melted it (1/3 wax ring) down double-boiler style and poured it into a screw cap container for easy use around the tying bench as I pre-tie and store my dubbing loop bodies ala; Leisenring, Hidy, Hughes, others, as seen here.
