For me, I tie big wooly buggers. That is, I put lead or chain eyes up front, double the marabou on the back, and maybe a tuft along the back. (will tie in a zonker strip from the head to the tail sometimes too) That has always been my go-to, year 'round. White, White/Chartreuse, Black, Brown, Red, and any combination of those seem to work. I will also put a dropper off the bend of the bugger, maybe a size 12 flashback pheasant tail or something. I'm always surprised how often they take the dropper.
