As far as river ratings go, I can't speak for other brands, but the river rating on the Venture Outdoor boats was obtained through the Coast Guard. They based it on length,diameter, and materials used in construction among other criteria. I can't say the Coast Guard still issues ratings as our models have not changed significantly, in design, since they were certified.
