pelican lake 5.10.12 - 5.12.12
#6
It was a really good trip, and the weather was better this time than I can ever remember. Hardly any wind to deal with at all. However, even though the conditions were optimal, the fishing was TOUGH. Every bass we caught was deep in the reeds, so you had to fish weedless rigs. They weren't even hanging out at the edges of the reeds like they usually are. You had to pitch directly into the reeds and we lost a lot of gear, even using weedless stuff. Fireline is a necessity. Very few hooks were lost...but lots of plastic. Also, we lost quite a few fish due to them taking our lures down into the bottom of the reeds. That usually resulted in a couple of trophy reeds...and no fish. And sometimes you'd be literally dragging a fish across the tops of the reeds bringing it to the boat if you were lucky enough to get it out of the bottom of the reeds after hooking it! The quality of the fish is way up this year. Averaging a lot bigger than usual. Several 14+ inchers. I think the water is still just a little too cold as it was hovering around in the low 60's/high 50's while we were there.

The Bluegill bite is on once the water warms up and if you can find them. We found several willing schools and occassionally stopped and Bluegill fished to get our fish numbers back up. Quite a few 9" Bluegills and most were at least 6" or so. Very healthy this year, and plentiful. Even out in the middle of the lake you can catch them.

We also stopped at Currant Creek on the way back on Saturday and were surprised to find nobody there...but the fishing was ON. Lots of Rainbows, a few Cutts, but no Tigers were caught (which is why we went there...).

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.
