Ending May with Smallmouth & Cats (Ron note)
#1
This was a really good month of fishing both on Lake Lowell and the Snake River. The size and numbers both places has been excellent.

Today I finished out the month fishing for smallmouth on the river. The day was a very good example of the value of patience and persistence. From 9-11 AM, I had two strikes - from a 14" smallie, and a big channel cat that crushed my spinnerbait. I'd guess it around 8-10 pounds. It was the third channel cat this week. I have also caught a dandy flathead this week. All took my bass lures.

Back to today: After struggling the first two hours, the next one was on fire. From 11-12 noon, I landed 17 smallmouth, including this 19.5" spawned out female. I would have liked to have caught her before she spawned, for she was a big tough looking gal.

All these fish were caught in 1-3' of water using a Zoom Super Fluke. The fish were very active; charging across the shallows to get the bait. I finished out at 1 PM with 22 smallies, with several 14-16" fish. In all, it was a good ending to a very enjoyable month.

PS: I only got to fish Lake Lowell 21 times this month and the river 8 times. I'm not sure what happened on those other two days.
