Wow, I appreciate all the responses! Thanks guys for the tips. I am going to give it a try over the next few days. I have a source of hatchery 'bows that I can pick through and they still have eggs last time I checked... maybe I will harvest some roe from them.
The bull trout..I think they could be lockjaw because of spawning activity?? or maybe I need to target them during a different part of the day.
No bull trout in stanley lake as far as I know.. there is a trap/blockade installed at the outlet that prohibits fish from getting in or out.
Also, Brownliner, thanks for looking into that re: federal v. state rules on bull trout.. I was wondering that myself how exactly we are able to target them and get around the no harass/pursue rules of the ESA. Of course, Snake River Spring Chinook are also listed as threatened under the ESA, yet fishing for them is allowed when IDFG/NOAA opens up the season for them.
Also... here is a video I took two years ago of bull trout at Alturas.. saw the same thing a few days ago, except the fish have grown a little bit
