Well it's true. My fly skills are "less than great", but I have a very hard time committing, since I'm in it for a little bit of everything on most trips.
If I only took one rod to most places, it wouldn't be a fly rod. Definitely not if I've driven a great distance either.
I've found that when I don't bring a fly rod, there are times that I wish I had it, though it would be useless for much of the time.
Just like when I fish certain creeks with a steep gradient, deep pools, and fast water. For me, trying to use a fly rod all day would be a poor use of gas $, but there may be a few spots where it would be just right.
That's always been the case with me though; Not limiting myself one way or the other. Keeping options open keeps fish in my hands and I don't feel the least bit ashamed to switch methods if one isn't working out.
