Bear Lake Westside 12-7-12

[cool][#0000ff]From your description, I would say that you probably would have had a better shot if you had fished outside the brush line. Whitefish typically hang out in deeper water, close to the shallower rocks they plan to use for spawning. Then they swarm in, do the deed and head back out into deeper water. They don't seem to cruise into very shallow water...especially if their escape route is blocked by brush. But if you had been able to get out to the brush line and fish just a few feet further out you might have caught a few. A lot of the ones we caught on Friday were taken by casting in close to the stickups and then working back in. And a lot of the hits came shortly after "splashdown".[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You had asked on another post about catching the whitefish at other times of the year. Once they spawn they wander the lake, hugging the bottom in sometimes very deep water. They are often targeted through the ice and hit small baited jigs and spoons well. The Rock Pile can be good for them when they move in to slurp up the eggs from the spawning ciscos. During winters when the lake doesn't freeze you can see lots of boats snagging ciscos on the rock pile and a few that are fishing for the larger whitefish.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The water levels are lower than last year and there are more whitefish being caught right off the rocks outside the marina. They hang out within easy casting distance so if you find some and make good presentations you can usually score a few.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Glad the PDF writeup addresses your questions. I don't care what anybody says, those fish have bones and they are better if you remove them before cooking or smoking. My personal opinion.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Good luck if you make it out again.[/#0000ff]
