I haven't gotten out too much yet this winter, and I have never tried any other augers. But I bet they aren't as good as a Nils.
I have a 6in Nils. I have no problem drilling through 12 to 24inches of ice. 24 is the thickest I have tried so far. If I can do it, you should have NO problem. Take care of the blade and don't let anyone drop or bang it on the ice, and it will take care of any holes you need.
