I rember reading about these in my youth. Earth worms in south america reaching 4 feet long.
With worms that big I can see why a bird might have to give up flying.
We used to have them in North American sothern regeons and some islands, but farming took care of that problem back in the 1700's
that was right about when the elusive do'do' bird went extinct.
