Very cool to have the rod explode!! As FG said never hold the rod above the cork, it adds so much pressure and load to the rod it is crazy.
Another thought, when wading as it appears you were, you can actually lean side ways and get your rod in the water. I am not sure why that works, but with really big fish it can confuse them and get them to turn around.
