There is the "traditional" way of drop shotting (open hook/nose hooking the bait) and the less commonly used weedless way. I gave up on the traditional way at least a year ago on Lake Mead. The only way to really use the traditional way on Mead you have to be able to sight fish/know exactly what you are casting in otherwise you are going to get hung up on something and break off constantly.
I haven't really seen a decline on my catches going with a weedless dropshot set-up. Bonus... I am not loosing nearly as many rigs. Bonus... I am actually catching more fish dropshotting since I can use it in more places w/o the concern of getting hooked into brush/whatever and loosing my set-up. Downside... I guess ones finesse worm does have less action so one should assume more bass might be looking at it and not biting due to that fact.
Works for me. I hate loosing equipment. Still light rod/tackle, light line, small hook and a finesse worm. (not a dropshot hook though and rigged weedless).
Also... There is a percentage of people that "power" dropshot in some situations (never messed with this myself). Baitcaster, 15lb line/whatever line you normally use for a texas rig, 2/0 or 3/0 EWG hook, etc. The principal here is the fish are suspended so a bottom dragging texas type of rig isn't as effective as having your bait up some from the bottom. So you just rig your normal texas rigged worms, craws, beavers, etc dropshot style but heavy duty and use a dropshot type of weight.
As far as the back of a cove/in the nasty stuff... I never mess with a dropshot set-up. Texas rig only for me unless I see a open area in the brush that is just screaming toss a dropshot here.
