So Cal Ocean Vets Advice..
#29
If you go out on a halfday boat or any boat for that matter, it would be best to leave you freshwater gear at home. Chances are it won't be able to handle the weight you'll need to use or the current. Plus setting the hook will be a problem with the amount of line you'll have out. Your best bet will be to rent a rod and get any tackle you'll need at the landing. They'll be able to tell you what size hooks you'll need based on the size of the live bait they have for the day. They'll also know where the boat will be going and be able to set you up with the propper size weights. Listen to the deckhands. It's their job to help you catch fish and they're out there everyday. They'll show you how to rig up properly. If the boat is crowded, you can only throw jigs from the bow (the front of the boat) and unless you know what you're doing it would be a waste of time. If you're on a half day run, you'll probably catch a scuplin. It's orange with black spots and is one of the best eating fish in the world. Only problem is they are VERY POISIONOUS!!!! One stick from their spines and you're in for hours of pain and agony. Let the deckhands deal with them. Good luck, keep a bait in the water, and get 'em good. And don't forget to tip the deckhands at the end of the trip!
