Hey Ron thanks for the advice I'll try the empty stomach. I will probably do med's too I get too sick to go without. Later J
Although not eating may help you to not throw up (probably just end up dry heaving) as you won't have anything in your stomach, it has little if any influence on whether you will get motion sickness. The one good thing about fishing in SoCal is that the seas are usually good compared to a lot of other places. Plus the half day boats don't really travel long distances where you are spending countless hours going up and down even if the weather is bad I get motion sickness fairly easy but have never once been sick fishing in SoCal. I rarely have had to take medication fishing there either but have in many other places.
So the two best options are bonine or scopolamine patch. It is best to use these at least a couple of hours prior to leaving. However, if the seas are predicted to be calm, I'd say not to take anything. Scopalmine is by far more effective but as you stated it takes a prescription to get it. The major problem with bonine is that it often makes you drowsy, less so with scopalmine. One of the issues with scopolamine is that it can cause blurred vision in some people. This will only be a problem for driving. So even if you got blurred vision, I'd recommend taking the patch off as soon as you notice it and it will only take a couple of hours to go back to normal as long as you haven't kept the patch on all day. If you are one of those that get blurred vision, it probably won't take long to determine you are one of the few. You usually have to arrive early, so just ask when you arrive how the weather is suppose to be and if it is going to be bad, if you are going to use bonine just take it then, you should have time. If you want to be really proactive, get a scopolamine patch and put it on the night before as they last for three days and it gives your body extra time to adjust to it.
Lastly, if you use the patch, wash your hands afterwards as it gets absorbed by any contact with the skin and also is a problem if you get it in your eyes.
Good luck.
