Frustrated fishing. Need rod/reel help

Thanks, I'm going to give it one more shot and try the advice from that website on hooking them.

I'm using a rental boat, so anywhere on the lake is game.

I'm going to head to the lake now and I might try to make a video of what I'm doing, I think that would be a lot easier to point out my flaws.
