I went out last night for what is probably my last catfishing trip of the summer. It was a tough week at work and an evening listening to the sounds of the river was just what was needed.
I first tried to go to a new spot, but it was a solid mat of weeds for 20 yards or more from the bank. The river is close to as high as I have seen it all summer.
I started fishing a bit after sunset. It was slow, but I brought home one good catfish. I lost 2 others, one when my line broke at the hook, and another that got hung up in a weed bed and twisted free.
When it was pitch dark, I turned on my headlamp to see what was happening in the river. I saw a big catfish hunting no more than 5 feet off the bank. That was cool to see. I pulled my lines in, and set the baits close to shore. I got 3 more strikes in just a few minutes. I'm not sure why I didn't connect with those.
