I think that everyone has a right to an opinion and I took no exception to anyone's analysis of mine. To hear that the DWR is doing something to improve the fishery at Yuba is heartening. I hope that it is enough and implemented soon enough.
There is a long litany of problems with managing Yuba. Water is foremost and with no one possessing a crystal ball to look into the future it becomes even more problematic.
Since I am not privy to the departments management plan I can only hope that it is more comprehensive than establishing limits and planting perch.
I am not a biologist, but I am a professional fisherman who has spent the greater part of my life on the water as a charter boat captain, and a guide. I am old, autocratic and opinionated. What I care for, I care for with great passion.......and I am passionate about the fishery at Yuba.
Like all of you, I buy a fishing license, I buy boats and motors, electronics and rods and reels. A portion of all of these tens of thousand of dollars of purchases in the form of taxes goes to help fund the DWR. I am, like all of you, the constituency of the department and I have my opinions as to how they should manage the waters we pay them to manage. The professional make the decisions, but I still have the right to disagree and to WHINE when I believe they can do more.
I applaud the DWR and especially Drew Cushings for their efforts to improve the fisheries throughout the state. What they have done is quite remarkable especially with tiger muskies and other esox species. The hatchery in SLC will improve many waters and make Utah a better place for the angler to live.
Until I hear that there is more to their plan than what has been mentioned here, which I don't believe is enough, I will still maintain they have fallen down on the job. That's the end of my whining, I like all of you, will watch the fishery unfold and hope that the best minds in the department are asking themselves " Is there more we can do?" Steve
