We will be trap netting pre-spawn perch immediately after ice out next year from Fish Lake for transfer to Yuba. Oregon is able to capture about 350,000 perch annually using a similar method. Although I do not think we will achieve that same success at Fish Lake, moving 100,000 fish annually is not unrealistic. Whether or not this will be sufficient to achieve the 30-35% removal of perch biomass annually to effect a change in the size of perch in Fish Lake remains to be seen. With a little bit of luck, this project will benefit both fisheries.
I might mention that we will also be purchasing 6-8" perch this fall for immediate stocking into Yuba.
The management effort at Yuba was only possible through the hard work of a group of anglers, the biologists in the Central and Southern Regions, and the water users all working together. Even if this initial effort does not produce the desired results, I have no doubt that the cooperative effort shown in producing the current management plan will continue and Yuba will be a destination fishery in the long run. Each member of the group should be congratulated on their hard work.
