Thanks for the pic of the clearwater Coho. I thought Cohos had more of that hooked upper jaw. What's annoying is how all of the northwest states show picture of chinook when they are all silver and they alll just say that chinook have an all black mouth whole coho have white to light gray. I wish they could all help a noobie fisher out and do a little better job showing the differences at various stages in the fishes life. After spending a bit on the internet there seems to be quite a few people who have a tough time identifying them. Not a whole lot but still a fair ammount.
So I called up and talked to fish and game about fishing in closed sections of water and catching salmon. I wanted to make sure that if I caught one and had it in my hands for a picture when an officer approached that I would be legal. They didn't really give a straight answer but in a round about way they said that you can't go out and target salmon intentionally in closed waters. But they had no issues if you are fishing for steelhead and catch a salmon, you can take a picture with them but they must be released unharmed and as fast as possible. I haven't read the chinook pamphlet in a while but what they told me may be word for word out of it.
I was targeting steelies. Last thing I was expecting to catch was a salmon, because everybody makes them sound like pickier fish than steelhead, but they are a nice not so little bonus. When fishing seems slow.
