Landed my first *Chinook*!
#56
Thanks all, didnt mean for this to turn into a big debate.

I went and talked to one of the professors here in campus who has his PhD in some kind of fisheries field. First I just described the fish to him and told him that after/before releasing I had seen quite a few others that looked just like it breach the water. I told him that it was dark, its nose WAS NOT hooked, and that its upper jaw was white but lower was black.

After showing him the picture he had to agree and said something similar to what SteelheadKid has been saying that for how late in the season it is and how dark the fish is its upper jaw would have more than likely been hooked. He did say that it is hard to say for sure and that there is a small chance I got into a little run of Coho's but he fealt that it was Chinook.

One thing he mentioned and maybe I mis understood him but can the size of the eye be a useful tool in helping determine the species? He made it sound like Coho have bigger eyes but maybe I misunderstood.

[fishin] Anyways It was my first salmon and this whole experience has given me a bit more knowledge on Fish ID'ing. Finally got done with my second round of mid terms so maybe next weekend I can venture on back and try for them danged steelhead.
