The pupil in the center of the eye is much smaller on a chinook. Coho have a large pupil, though not as large as chum. I mentioned that in an earlier post.
I still think it was likely a coho. But, I will concede that without seeing the back up around the dorsal it is hard to tell. A king would have spots, hard to distinguish when that dark, but still lots of spots like a brown trout. Silver would have no spots. The tail too is spotted completely throughout the tail on a chinook, coho have relatively few spots in the tail.
