Pounding bottom with large meat hooks and oversized magnets had little to no effect. All it did was kick up the mud and make the camera completely worthless.The only way you're going to get that thing up is with the rigid pole and gaff hooks that you can drag across the bottom. I suggested something similar to your dad but I think you're on to something with the PVC.

Keep your hook bend as close to the size as the attached picture. That size hook grabbed hold of my 8" power anger very well and didn't let go, even with the additional weight of the motor. Good luck!
