I always use steel leader. The peace of mind alone is worth it.
I typically use steel leader when fishing for tiger musky and pike.
I once was flyfishing for tiger musky without a steel leader -- just using 10lb mono. After I landed 4 small tiger musky < 30", I hooked a big one. It was over 40". I played him and played him. Had him to the boat twice, but couldn't get him in the net. He was big too -- not just long, but lots and lots of girth (These fish were much "fatter" than the typical Pineview tm's). After the second miss with the net he made another run, and then the line went slack. He cut me off and I lost him.
I went the rest of the day using a steel leader with my flies and caught 4 more. The fish didn't care one way or another. But losing that big fish convinced me to use them!
