I've never fished with a submersible light, but from what I've seen on other boards it's best to fish the areas at the edge of the light. Maybe you were too close?

I've been using this 365nm UV LED flashlight for over two years. I bought it when it was almost $40 and it was totally worth it. It's very bright, but it doesn't put out much visible light and charges glowing lures faster and brighter than 395mn+ lights.

Found an even cheaper one with a lifetime warranty if your friends won't give you guff about a UV flashlight that says PEEDAR on the side:
