Tube Hockey at Willard 2-18-14
#33
[#0000FF]Probably the closest call I had with wind-blown ice happened at Starvation. I liked to tube it as the ice was coming off each year...pitching big Rapalas along the ice edges for some dandy browns.

On one late February trip I was enjoying being kept in place next to a big drifting ice sheet by the gentle offshore breeze. But when the wind changed direction it started blowing back in toward the dam...with me between the ice and the dam. I had to kick up a roostertail with my fins to make it to the sandy corner of the dam and then back up at a run...tube around my waist...as the fast moving ice sheet hit the dam. Same thing. Layer after layer of ice slid up the face of the dam and then broke off for the next layer to start. If I had not got out of the way there would have been a great weight loss program.
