Mojo,
I have to agree with TJ even if you don't. I found the basics of fly fishing simpler than with a spinning or bait casting outfit. Meaning with the same amount of time spent developing fishing skills I was able to cast more accurately and land more fish in a stream setting. Of course one can spend all sorts of time pursuing more complicated fishing skills that have various applications. Personally I enjoy the extreme accuracy I have with a fly rod that I can't begin to approach with any other outfit. I also enjoy the fight of fish in moving water. How hard is it really to get some basics down and catch fish on the Provo let alone most Utah streams? I've taught 2 people to fly fish. Besides my son I taught a friend that came out to Utah a few years ago that never fly fished before. Most of the day we spent in Park City for reasons of his visit. We got away for a few hours between his work and meeting with people for dinner. He landed about a dozen trout averaging maybe a foot or so in his first hour ever handling a fly rod. Expert under all conditions no way but good enough to have an enjoyable outing on the river. I personally have no desire to drive Daytona or climb Everest or master ever possible skill with fly fishing. I master what I need to fish well where I want. Some on here make a living with fishing and need a variety of expertise that the typically recreational person will never approach. It's not to say they don't have superb skills just because some of us say it easy to catch fish with a fly rod.
