I agree with you. I don't think there are many differences between salmon fishing and other types of fishing in terms of the types of people. But, with salmon fishing, people are put under a spot light and scrutinized when they are standing shoulder to shoulder with each other. People are in close quarters, so naturally more conflict will occur.
Also, some of the posts on this forum don't necessarily make salmon fishermen seem like the most friendly, open minded people. I mean, come on, having a full on argument over braid vs mono and attacking each other on that basis is ridiculous. When I'm on the river, if you want to use braid, mono, or a loomis or an ugly stick, use a float or drift fish, what difference does it make to me? None! But, you read these posts and it seems as if people are judged on just about everything on the river. I agree there are intricacies that improve catch rates, etc. but there are a variety of reasons one person uses one product or another, whether it's economic reasons or that's what they prefer, who cares!
I agree you cannot stereotype salmon fishermen, but you also are going to have people that misrepresent every different segment of fishermen.
