FWIW - I stopped by the river Friday (Jeff knows the spot) looking for Crappie and Bass. Found some of each, and a MESS of bitty kitties. Pesky little buggers, but very plentiful, so there's lots of recruitment going on.
I found spring cats in the 20" range CHOCK full of eggs, so I don't think that have to be THAT big to be good spawners. I'd have to agree with Mike too on the boating thing. I've rarely seen many trailers at the launches, with the exception of Carpalooza! And of course the afternoon recreationalists hammering the Benson area. (Jetskiers with not jackets. Hmmm - here's your sign! and SHOULD be a ticket!)
I honestly don't think even low water puts a hurt of the cats, they are so hearty, and very adaptive to such a varied diet (as are the carp, of course).
There are some who complain about the areas getting hammered by anglers, but I really think a LOT of that is the common locations - bridges. That's why I go to OTHER spots farther out of the way whenever I can.
I've never done much fall or summer catting, so maybe this will be my year to change all that. Are we going to have to nudge the contest out through October next year?
I will still encourage the release of bigger cats, especially in running the contest. But I'll admit, I enjoy the filets on a two footer and everytime I see farm-raised catfish at the store, and look at the price - I just

Jeff, the Kokes have bulked up, and are pinking up, and I'm about done. But I'll surely be back after them next year! It's nice to do some trolling again.
BLK - this one's for you. I do love how you get your young clan into the fray - good on ya man! I'd be afraid to see what kind of cat action you would show us if you got into the REEL cat-waters up north! [cool]
I don't think we've seen the last of STH and crew, but come fall, comes birding seasons too. That can be tough competition for some.
