Interesting thread for sure. I only fish, I don't have it in me to be a hunter, I'm just not comfortable with killing a warm blooded animal and watching it die. I understand it has to be done by someone or there wouldn't be any meat but for some reason, something deep inside me sides with prey animals rather than predators.
With that said, I feel no hesitation to kill a fish though LOL. A fish subjectively to me, just doesn't function mentally in any way similar to how we function. Their notion of pain isn't on the same level as we would feel with a hook in our lips. Any warm blooded animal such as birds and mammals feel pain on a similar level to us. But cold blooded animals are another story. I won't go as far as that fish feel no pain at all, just not on the same level. Eventually we have to kill certain things……plants, flies, spiders…….I haaaate spiders! But anyhow yeah, I wouldn't worry about a humane way to kill fish.
Here's what I do. In cold weather like now I throw the fish into a bucket and it's dead by the time I'm ready to fillet and still fresh. In summer I throw them into a cooler of ice where they meet their demise. On the ice I just pile them on the ice and they thrash till not moving or frozen partially.
There is one thing I don't feel good about is when people kill carp and throw them on the banks. Or smash their heads with a rock. Seems ultra violent to me. If I don't plan on eating a fish, I release it. Yes, I understand they are trash fish but I just don't feel right about killing anything and not using it.
