The Smitty Sled

I've posted these pic's on here earlier this year (Jan). Built my version of the "Smitty" two years ago... maybe it'll give you some ideas to incorporate into your design.

It's really a simple rig that pins together, no fasteners required. Many ways to skin this cat, but the basis is a pair of 2x4's pinning into uprights mounted on skis.

My "Smitty style" base is made from 2x8's for the uprights and 2x4's for the cross members (all painted Petty Blue of course). The storage locker is mounted on 1" PVC frame. 1/2" PVC "goal posts" hold my Nils auger, and a pair of screw-in U-brackets hold the spud. The ski's cost me $10 at Deseret Industries. A modified "Blitz Box" (aka tough crate, milk crate) holds the jigging rods. This just hangs on a couple of hooks fastened to the locker. Lifts off easy and contains/protects my jigging rods at all times.



The mount for my Vex is a modified "carry over" from my original Jet Sled Jr. modification. The 1" PVC frame has two legs that slide easily into the 1 1/4" PVC uprights. That's my transducer cup in the lower right.


Pulls like a dream compared to my old Jet Sled. No more "iceberg" effect on those afternoon-turned-evening trips following a slush day on the ice. In fact I put eyelets on the back of the sled to make it easy to lower down steep banks, because it really wants to take off on a slope. Nothing more embarrassing than get run over by your own sled! [laugh]
