Arizona, federal agencies finalize trout hatchery deal at Willow Beach
#1
The Arizona Game and Fish Department and the US Fish and Wildlife Service agreed to a fifty-fifty split of the $776,000 repairs necessary to get the fish hatchery back into use. It went out of commission because water levels had fallen at Lake Mohave.

The Fish and Wildlife Service will also supply two million rainbow trout eggs each year to Game and Fish for five years and supply 160,000 Apache trout eggs for 10 years.
“This partnership will ensure the continuation of trout stockings going forward in the Colorado River,” said Arizona fisheries chief Chris Cantrell in a press release. “This is a great day for Arizona anglers.”

Sen. John McCain and Rep. Paul Gosar agitated in Washington D.C. to assure the federal agency worked out a deal with Arizona, and Mohave County Supervisor Hildy Angius also played a key role in keeping the hatchery as a top priority. Mohave County recently voted to allocate money this year to stock fish near the hatchery while the repairs were being made.

Game and Fish staffers and other fisheries biologists that work on the Colorado River have said that it is unlikely a trout released at the Willow Beach Hatchery would make it all the way to Lake Havasu.
