I am not familiar with Hyrum, but for most waters (unless you are fishing for mackinaws you were in too deep of water). My experience on waters that I am not extremely familiar with is to follow the crowd. If people gather in one area and you don't see most of them leaving after a short time, you can bet they are doing ok. Also, don't hesitate to go exploring and visit with other folks. That is one of the pleasures of ice fishing is that you can visit out on the ice and learn how others are doing.
