snapping turtle encounters --- dangerous or no?

Once I float a donut shape pond not knowing how deep it was or what was swimming in there... to my surprise to find it full of snapping turtles and big ones, nothing else just all those..... Took my change and float around that donut pond once and fish it... didn't catch a fish.... All those snappers did come up close to check me out, really made me uneasy....
