Were you certain that at it was someone's hole? I fell through on one leg up to my groin a week and a half ago. I was thinking the same thing but I went over near where I fell in and I chipped away at the edge of the hole. There was a big spot where the ice was just about 2 inches of soft crappy ice, then straight water. I chipped a big ol hole away, about 3 feet across. This was Jan 25 though, when it was really warm.
