Good points. I was hesitant at first for those same reasons. They definitely have more policies and much higher monitoring by judges which can take away from the experience of ice fishing. On the other hand, it does level the playing field for a contest that has some sweet prizes. There won't be much question about the results. I figure, for me personally, if I'm ice fishing for fun I'm all for the comforts of my own tent and such. But in competition mode I want things as even as possible.
As for the pre-drilled holes. They open the contest up to 200 contestants (easily filled in their Colorado competitions, but doesn't seem likely here). And they pre-drill 20% more holes than contestants registered. This allows for people to move around easily if they aren't having any action in their hole. I'm liking that idea.
