POLL: Some thoughts on C&R of kokanee salmon
#23
I mean lets be real here for a minute. While I agree that catching Kokes puts more stress on the fish than catching a rainbow does, their sensitive mouths and the usual hard fight they put up. One of the main roots causes for their mortality rate is as it is on trout and Kokes alike is improper c&r techniques. If you aren't planning on keeping the fish don't even take it out of the water. That alone goes along way. Every time I watch that red head on channel 4 catch trout I shake my head... Fingers all up in their gills, holding the fish (reducing their protective slime on their skin), then Releasing them "to fight another day". Big ol cuts that I think to myself, yeah that probably didn't make it. Then all the bank tanglers that bring the fish onto shore, slamming against the rocks, most the time gut hooked on a treble caked with powerbait. C&R is all about proper handling techniques. I love Kokanee and fishing for them and have caught 100s of them, I would hate to waste a fish by releasing them to their deaths. I have got to think that the high mortality rate has a lot to do with as I said handling.
On another note, I'm not a big fan of catching cutts, which in strawberrys case is most of what you catch. What a boring fish! They pretty much just swim right up to the boat! Rainbow on the other hand, if strawberry could hold the consistent bigguns like Starvation does, what an amazing fishery it would be...
