Escape to Willard 6-21-16

[#0000FF]The design will work with any size PVC. The key is to have a holder fitting that holds the end of your rod firmly...not too loose. Some rods have bigger handles than others so you have to fit it to your own tackle.

When putting it together, I like to rotate the fitting backward a few degrees above level and out at an angle of about 30 degrees. That insures that any fish that grabs on will be locking the rod butt more firmly in the holder, with minimal potential for rod loss. It also provides the ideal angle for having the fish hook itself...enough flex in the rod to absorb shock but enough pull to start the hookset. It takes a bit of experience and experimentation to find the right settings for your preferences.

Yes, I only put a small amount of the rod end in the quick draw holder. Believe me, it is plenty secure. I got the idea originally while watching crappie fishing shows...with the anglers using "spider rigs". These guys fish with long rods...with only the end of the butts secured in that type of holder. Makes it easier to both set the rod in the holder and to haul back to set a hook when you get bit.

If you gotta break a rod, it's best to break a cheap one. But it still hurts if it was a favorite stick. Seems like you really get attached to some rods for their unique feel and action...and then they break. Some are hard to replace. But I kinda have a rule that any rod broken within the top half of the rod is likely not going to be satisfactory if repaired. A repair usually requires a ferrule or a splice. Both put a flat spot right where you need the most even flex...for maximum feel, control and strength.

On the other hand...depending on how much rod you have left...you may be able to simply add a tip top and end up with some kind of specialty "meat rod". I'd have to see it to make a proper evaluation.
Then again, you could always enter the javelin throw at Rio...at the upcoming olympics.
