I have found that the better option is actually replacing the snaps with Velcro unless severely shrunken to the point that even this method will not line up, reason being you can adjust the overlap to make up for the shrinking and stretching depending on temperature. The Velcro will also seal better than the snaps to keep out wind and rain, it also spreads the stress points across the entire fabric instead of a few grommet/snap holes.
