If you don't mind telling where you were fishing? I'll be up in Ogden for a wedding in a couple weeks and I would love to take my daughters out. Thanks!

This video was shot up in cache county out in the Cutler marsh. But the bear river is big. Im sure there are areas down that way that you could get into some fish!!![fishon] good luck

Sweet video![fishon]

What bait did you use to catch those big cats? I saw worms but... What is your favorite bait when targeting catfish?

Thanks

Worms and carp meat! Any fresh cut bait seams to do the trick

I'm stoked! We are moving up to Perry in a few weeks and I'm going to spend a lot of time on the Bear River and Cutler! Have you ever looked into the setline permit for up there? I really want to try setlines while cruzing up and down the river in the ole flat bottom mud boat!

Awesome!!! the bear river is plentiful!!! lots of cats bass crappie and walleye!! Ive even caught a brown trout!
I have always wanted to try set lining. But Ive never tried it. When the catfishing is good it would be hard to keep up running lines. (Depending how far apart they where) And there is just something about a big cat stripping drag on a rod and reel! I cant get enough of it!!! best of luck!! and thank you for your support!

I've got a set line permit and they are really a pain to set up and get out and then when you get some big fish on it, they tie themselves in knots and break off the hooks and I've found it takes too much time and doesn't really pay off so I only set mine up once or twice a year and mostly target carp so I can get bait for the cats... The day I set mine out this spring, I soaked it for half a day and didn't catch one fish... So don't believe all the stories of hot fishing on Cutler, some days you may find hot fishing, but other days it's a lot like Willard and can skunk you pretty easy... I've only hit one hot day on the pond this year and I've been out too many times... I think it just depends on where the pod of fish are at any given time... When they come through it seems like everyone catches fish, but when they aren't around there is lots of sitting and waiting... now I haven't tried down the canyon or out of Cache Junction like SettheHook, so maybe that's why I'm not finding the numbers he did, but I still think its a day to day deal... I do need to get out again, been too long.. Almost done with the hay so maybe soon... Later J

It's definitely hit and miss. If you have a flat-bottom boat you'll have more success because of the more area you can cover. The water has been fast and high, so that has changed the ball game a bit this year; but all in all, they're in there and they will bite if you can find them.

Also, fishing at night improves your chances drastically. So if your schedule fits that time, you'll be golden.

+1 on the hit or miss.
We went out yesterday in the canoe. We fished all over clay slough down to the islands, and caught only 4 cats less than 1/hour. Only two were over 20 inches.
The remainder of our catch was only 3 bullheads, one small carp and my son caught a rusted out, broken muskrat trap. it didn't snap on his line, but he said it hit pretty hard. Maybe it was tumbling in the current.
Maybe yesterday afternoon was just the wrong time to be catching, but it was still the right time to be fishing.
I would like to have stayed and fished after dark, but family obligations prevented it last night.

Yea I gave up on fishing the current this spring it's Jost too strong even still! All my success has come from very shallow water far away from any current! Run off will slow eventually!!!! Have you fished the river much on years previous?

We used to fish the river channel exclusively until I learned better, now I only fish it after the shallows gets too hot for the cats and they retreat to the cooler depths. I don't think anyone is missing much by not fishing the current now. But the higher flows are retreating so it may start to get better. I actually snuck out fishing last night about sundown, the wind was too strong for dew so I couldn't bale, so I went and caught a few. I got 2 22"er females to start and I can't believe how fat they are now. Then the yellow bellies started and I think I got at least six of them and then things got interesting. Had a fish take off and kept pulling drag. It took quite a while to tame that one and I figured I had something contest worthy. I was wrong it was only a 24" male but it sure was a good fighter. Right after I had another one do the same thing to me only it was a green 24" male. Kind of fun but man the skeeters were terrible last night. Went full on head net jacket and then complained about the bites on my hands. So be ready for bugs they really came out last night. That was the best trip I've had in awhile so the hit and miss continues. I like from sundown till about 11:00 seems to be the most active fishing for me. Sure fun when they'll bite but it seems like they swim in pods because when I get a bite on one pole I almost always get one on the other pole while I'm fighting the first. Sure keeps things interesting. Well got to run so catch ya later J

Hey Derek, you getting out much this year? Keep thinking I'll run into you, but don't seem to. The high flows have seemed to change things a little but still finding a few in the old spots. Just depends on the day. Sure not finding any big days this year, but is fun to wrassel with a big one. You ever see John out anymore? Sounded like he was going to get back after the fish again and then he disappeared again. Well catch ya Later J

I've only made it out once so far this year, (last week) but my son and I nailed 18 of them in 4 hours of fishing.....9pm-1am. Sucker meat was the bait of choice and water with SOME current but not too heavy was the best place. Water in the 1-4' depth range was tops. We anchored in the current at the edge of the channel and cast to the shallows where the current wasn't too strong. Kept a few for eating and turned the majority back. Nothing over 25", Smallest was 18".

No mosquitos, no mud cats, and loads of fun!

Nice video! So many good spots to fish and explore on this lake and marsh. I'm not nearly as successful fishing during the heat of the day as I am at night though, but it sure is easier on the body!

Night fishing is always better for cats! But it's harder to get my wife to go with me at night. Too cold too many bugs etc. I hoping to get out there tonight!!!! I need to remember to bring my contest logo so I can start helping out team north!!!! Anyone else headed out after cats this weekend?
