Pineview crappie fishing Monday

I’m thinking about fishing Pineview from my kayak Monday or Tuesday for Crappie. I’m new to Utah so this will be my first time on this body of water. Any kayakers or float tubers want to meet up with me to show me where to get started? I’ll buy breakfast! If not tips on where to launch would be appreciated! TIA!

[#0000FF]I'm going to hit the crappies myself...but probably not until Wednesday.

Go up Ogden canyon to the Eden turnoff which goes north over the dam. Follow that road around to the Port Ramp turnoff. Drive down to the bottom of the ramp and launch your yak there...parking back up the hill after unloading.

You can sometimes find fish right off the end of the docks. Do you have sonar. If not, you will have a tough time, since the fish hold in only a few areas, at exact depths.

Best bet for finding fish is to paddle back around toward the dam. You will be in an area called the narrows...for obvious reasons. The lake necks down as it gets closer to the dam. Stay on the north side of the channel and start looking for fish just off shore when you notice a change in the rocks along the shoreline. The bottom drops off quickly so you can be fishing 20 feet deep a few feet from shore. However, the fish are more likely to be about twice that deep so you will have to work in and out until you find them.

Fish small jigs...tipped with worm, wax worm, perch meat or Gulp minnows. Drop to the bottom and then raise it up a bit. Sometimes the fish are holding a few feet off the bottom and you may have to keep raising your offering a few inches at a time to find the right depth.

You may also catch bluegills, perch or smallmouths in the same area. Most bites this time of year are not hard...so you need light tackle and a sensitive touch. Set the hook if there is any "change in the force".

Thanks for the info TD. I've never fished Pinview either and was going to try it this week either Wed or Thurs ( I usually fish Strawberry). I've been dying to try to catch some Crappie for a couple of years now. Been trying at Sand Hollow the past couple of winters but no luck. I understand they make for some great fish tacos. If you see a SeaEagle pontoon Wed that's me, don't know which day I'll be there yet.

Is there a fee to launch there TD? I know PV is not a state park so the pass won't work there.

[#0000FF]The port ramp is one of the two public ramps on Pineview. There is no fee after Oct 1. There are other places around the lake where you can launch a float tube or kayak. See the attached map. The access and launching potential is always subject to water levels. Never a problem at the port ramp.

There is also a launch ramp at Cemetery point. Not sure what the winter access and fees might be. They were charging a basic access fee just to drive out on the point. I never launch there so not sure what the current situation is.

perch and blue gill fishing has been on fire with perch up to 12.5" and some nice gills! should be a great panfish year at pv

Those crappie smell like Lake Powell. Walleyes too.

the biggest crappie we picked up was 15" long. Most were about 13". They are all slabs!! Aggressive too! We picked up 3 crappie trolling big cranks for stripers. Others were taking while spooning for stripers with 1 1/4 oz spoons. They were pretty awesome for sure.


and, yes, that was Powell. If you like crappie, I'd be heading down to Powell right about now....
