California Ice Fishing?
#1

Hey there guys,

Are there a few guys on the board here fishing the hard water on California Lakes. If so, what are some of the most productive lakes. Here in southern California, Big Bear Lake freezes over, some years, bigtime but we're not allowed on the ice to ice fish! I've also heard some High Sierra lakes are ice fishable when you can get to them!

Lots of lakes must freeze over that are accessable during the winter.

Last time I was in the Big Bear vicinity, I saw an ice-breaking boat out there breaking away the ice. Not sure what they were doing. Then again, that was over 10 yrs ago.

Hi there lonehunter,

I asked about a year ago.

I heard that the bears with badges also hibernate. No No that's not true. I actually read that the ice does not get thick enough to support safe fishing. Ya right! I think it's because of the single narrow road around the lake with steep sides along the mountian side of the road as well as parts of the lake shore. After all, it is not a natural lake. They want skiers but not anglers!

Hi there Bassmaster-ND,

It is a well known fact that, unlike other state's snow and ice, California snow is always light and fluffy, never wet and always falls vertically like... straight down... never getting into folds of clothes or down collars.

Our ice, likewise, is warm to the touch, easily drilled, builds up to a very safe thicknesses almost instatinously, and has a surface that no one ever slips on.

Just thought you'd like to know the true facts of the matter.

They don't want to take away the competion from the ice skating rinks. LOL

Actually in Central Cali, at Seqoia National Park, they have a few lakes there that get around 6 inches of ice. They have never allowed ice fishing there because it is a resort and there are lots of ice skaters that enjoy those lakes.

I think that the ice skaters are part of PETA or something. They start crying at the first site of a fishing pole in the area.

That sound like it works great. Only problem here in SoCal, is that there is no ice. There is snow in some areas. Here are some pics from Big Bear Lake.

This particular spot happens to be about 250 miles south of the Seqoias. Notice that there is no ice. Bummer![pirate]

There is no icefishing to speak of in So. Cal. All of that is up north. Here are a few just for reference. Stampede, Prosser and Boca Reservoirs, Lake Davis, Carson Pass,South Lake, Lake Sabrina and Mammoth Lakes Loop. As you can see, these lakes are in central and northern California.
