Willard Mardi Gras party 3-5-19
#1
[#0000ff]Great party. Except I'm the only one who showed up. No other anglers...and no fish. Everyone musta gone to N'Awlins...or else they are all somewhere nursing a hangover from the night before.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff] [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Air temp was above freezing...33. Water temp only a little bit warmer...37. Water levels are up a foot or so from December...and fairly clear...so far. I'm betting on a full pond this year.
[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I covered a whole lot of acres of water out of the north marina...and inside the north marina...and only saw a few "suspect" marks on sonar all day. I had a couple of "pop and drop" inquiries and a couple of maybe nuzzles. No serious partyers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff] [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Not a complete loss. Got to test out some new PVC ideas and a couple of new rods I built over the winter. Also got in the last day on my last year's fishing license. Hope to put in some good use on my new one.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff] [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As I came back in to the ramp there was a lineup of lookylous waiting to interrogate me. When they asked "Waddidjagit?" I just shivered and said "hypothermia". Some thought it humorous. Others, not so much. Especially me. At least I got my annual Willard skunk out of the way.

Very cool Pat, I mean really cool.... Nice to see you on the water again... So what were the new PVC toys you mentioned... Kind of a different day per your usual ones you pick... maybe that was part of the reason for the less than hospitable reception... Thanks for getting out and getting the rest of us thinking about such things... Later Jeff

[#0000FF]Yeah, I generally try to plan trips for at least two days of nice weather. But with Mama Nature on a tear I hadda take what I could get...or wait until June.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]I told my wife I doubted if I would do very well. She said I should be more positive. So I said "Okay, I'm positive I won't do well." I hate it when I'm right for the wrong reasons.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]The PVC goodies are two new "rod trees". They combine 3 rod holders into one vertical tube. The center tube is for putting your rod handle in when you are rigging or handling a fish. The other two combine the two different quick draw holders I have had on each side...one pointing at an angle outward and the other more directly back behind the tube. There are conditions when I use either or both.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]After playing with them on the water I have decided I am going to rebuild the "front deck" PVC setup on both sides of my tube. Ooooh - ooooh. Get to play with more PVC.[/#0000FF]

Hey, Pat, way to get out and try and wake up some fish. There is not a lot of competition or disruption on the water this time of year.

I'm sure that you'll get your moneys worth out of the new license. I had to renew mine the other day and when I went to pay for it they gave you several options. The one year old fart license was $25.00 but they said best deal was the five year for $125. What a deal.[Smile]

Can you start to feel your feet yet?[Wink]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000][size 3]Hey Pat - perch are biting at Rockport. [Wink] And an auger IS required. And caught all the perch on one of those very small green things you make hung below a Hali on a chain and tipped with a perch eye, of course..[/size][/#800000][/font]

[#0000FF]Yeah, you probably still buy green bananas too.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]Hope your day of golf was better than my Mardi Gras party.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]I had to chuckle when I remembered when I used to fish for walleyes at night on Willard. One of my fishing buddies and I could sometimes be found this time of year...with warm clothes and rain gear hoods sorta protecting us from heavy snow. Once in a while we would shrug off a couple of inches of snow accumulation and say "crazy golfers".

[#0000FF]Yeah, I saw your post. Nice work and nice mess of chowder fixin's.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]But from your description of the shoreline ice conditions I might not be upset if you DID leave me on the ramp. Better than leaving a trail of yellow water across the ice.

Nice trees, been trying to figure out something similar myself, but mine was only one function at a time with changeable holders. PVC is great tinker toys for adults or big kids that never grew up. Thanks for showing us your new ideas. Later Jeff

wow that's a great looking buggy ride I like my old sardine can better. Got me a new shade topper for mine.
Catching fish is fun, but sometimes just the ride can be fun.
I've got to get out to test my new sonar, you know learn how to plug it in.

How was your quail hunt to Georgia? You must have left your cold/flu bug behind when you left, I have been down with the Gumba for almost 2 weeks, made 2nd trip to The Doc. today.

Dang Pat, I was feeling bad all day about a doctor appointment vs. fishing with you. Doc didn't have anything good to say so I still wished I was getting a skunk out of the way. At least the company would have been better. Just finished sunday's catch for dinner. Mighty good eating

Thanks for the report. I needed to see how to report the first skunk of the year. I think my last report was a bit long to say "I got nuthin," but I guess it was good writing practice.

Now that your skunk is out of the way, I'm really looking forward to your next report[Wink]

[#0000FF]Thanks. No need for excuses or apologies for making a skunk report. Most of the time when it happens there are learned lessons that others appreciate hearing about. If nothing else, you can detail your procedures for trying anything and everything...and maybe suggest alternative tactics for others less experienced.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]I can tell you that I have had more than a few trips when after a long fishless day I have been trying to come up with a good way to tell about it. Then, I try something else that works...or the fish finally decide to play...and the skunk is gone. There have been plenty of times when one last-cast fish has killed the skunk. But I ain't proud. I accept blessings when and where I can get them.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]Now the pressure is on. I have some years when I do not get skunked at all. Some years I have one skunk trip...usually my first shot on Willard. But I can't remember the last time I blanked more than one trip in a year...or at least reported it. (snicker snicker)

When I think about my last trip the thing that comes to mind is that in marginal conditions I should use stinger hooks. I think I might have hooked a couple that way, but I have a hard time doing it because I don't want that stinger ending up in the gullet of a monster cat that happened to be in a feeding mood.

If I were eating all of them, I would put the stingers on in a heartbeat!

Well darn it, I missed the Mardi Gras by being one day early. I had a string of glow beads but you would have to earn them with fish porn. [bobhappy] I took a ride out to both north & south marinas Tuesday afternoon. There was not a soul to be seen anywhere. Did see an eagle perched at the south end.

[#0000FF]I know how that bead thing works. I was in New Orleans during Mardi Gras one year while on a temporary work assignment. Crazy doin's. But I wouldn't bare any part of my aging body for anybody's beads...glow or not. On future trips I hope to do better with the fish porn. Save the beads.[/#0000FF]

I wasn't mentioning revealing something other than fish porn. I too know of the bead thing. There is a local bar in Coalville that has a Mardi Gras night.
