Very good day with the five year old grandson. We were looking for different species and did good. Trolling slow for us managed one walleye, and one wiper. The boys FIRST. For fun we did the bobber and worm thing. Kids love that and not disappointed. Two nice cats just 10 ft. off the rocks. and a few small mouths, caught on the Berkley minnow and jig. They can be fun.
Best part if the day, as the pictures will show. WIPER BOILS !! After chasing the boils for two hours I decided the reason I could not get a hit, and we were right in the middle, was minnows were about 1 or 2 inches. Very small, but the Birds loved them. My lures were to large, Worked great last year but not right now.
So if you go out try very small lures and watch for the birds.
We chased the birds from 11:30 to 2:00 and had a great show but no bites. The sonar was full of small bait balls and lots of fish around them.
Still was a fun day.
Found the boils just west of the Island and in the open water no special location just spread out wide
Sorry the pictures are not so good.

Good on you getting the boys out and catching some fish. That would be frustrating being in a wiper boil and not catching them.

Looks like you had fun and the kids have some memories. I was there Saturday but didn't see big flocks of birds like that. Maybe it was because of all the ski boats and jet skis.

Don't they just make chum out of the bait fish? [

The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

We got our lines crossed somewhere--I haven't been to Willard yet; still waiting for an invitation. Sounds like you have been having some success even though from what I hear she can be real fickle. Glad to see you are home from Europe and back to the important stuff [fishon].

Always great to get the little ones out for an adventure. I was there yesterday and for a brief time saw a bunch of bird activity out a ways from the swim beach. I thought they were just feeding on the mats of bugs in that area I passed on my way out. I had thoughts of heading over there but didn't want to drag up all my gear to find by the time I got there the event would be over. I guess I rationalized by thinking they were just eating bugs. Found a bunch of those little groceries you observed in a smallish wiper I caught. The fishing was pretty slow compared to previous outings. I guess it's boil time!

From those pictures you shared, looks like the birds were just parked on the water. Typically, if birds are on a boil, they are dive bombing and extremely active. I DO hope what you seen were boils but I have my doubts. But boils or not, your report with the kids is awesome!.

Oh birds were diving. Hard to fish and drive boat and manage kids. Got six poles in the boat too, that's a lot of hooks to get ya. And get the right picture too.
