If I recall the verbal beating I took last year when Cookie's swivel separated from , what she describes as a "record class" - likely, cat (not), I think her direct orders, given in that tone only your bride of 30+ years can muster, were to make sure she has the right gear for the contest this year - or else! (Craig I tried to use most types of punctuation in that sentence just for you. Not correctly, just used them)

It appears she had fun shopping on the whisker seeker webpage. Its about to get real. I might need one of you strong bucks to haul it to the water for me, though.

Now where to do the first test run. Maybe break it in on some carp

Having seen what various people use for cat fishing I have come to the conclusion that the rod is one of the less imortant parts of the gear. It seems that using heavy line is the most important. Ice_sled uses 30# mono with a 50# leader, and he should know something about landing the big ones. And I have seen several of the better guys use medium and medium-heavy UglyStiks so my big heavy rods look like overkill now. But as the man said about overkill with large, hot calibers for big-game hunting, you can't really make an animal over-dead. So use the big rods if it makes you happy. I feel just fine knowing that my big rigs will handle the biggest, fiestiest cats out there. So what if my rod doesn't wiggle as much as the next guy's? I'm not going for a line-class record.<br />

Looks like fun, happy for you two. Sure hope the cats will play nice for you. Right now I'm finding some cats in shallow 1.5-2' water depth. My guess is it warms faster so they are in there chasing food. Not a lot of fish so it won't be fast, but when you're after quality fish a couple will do. Good luck. Jeff

Jeff can you believe she just read my post and had the nerve to tell me it was my order not hers. She said she just needed bigger swivels and for me to actually tie the knot this time and that it was me online spending my bonus at Whisker Seekers. The nerve. I may not let her cook me breakfast in the morning.

She wants to try Willard in the morning. We picked up an Aquaview micro and she is anxious to test it.

That's quite the haul of tackle.  You can NEVER have too much money, or too much fishing stuff   I enlarged that photo, but couldn't really tell.  That Orange line, looks like 2 spools. Is that Catfish mono, about 30# ? 

 I bought this last year, mainly cuz I thought I could see it good. And I could. It was fairly strong, but it cast screwy, and the lline went out looking like a orange slinky. once it was on the water awhile, the coils flattend out, but I just didn't really care for it. 
Hope you have better results if that is mono.

I have had some really poor luck with large diamter mono for exactly the reason you mention, but I opted to try again. To see if I get better flow off the spool without all that memory coiling, I dropped down to 15 lb high performnace mono  and will run 20 or 30 lbs leader. This line is the line they sell on whisker seekers. It got good reviews, so will see. But I have my braid ready if I dont like it. Hope we see you out on the river. Still decideing if it will be Willard or the Bear in the morning.

I have gotten at least a dozen catfish specific rods and reels from different companies over the last 55 + years of of catfishing for Channels, Bues, and Flatheads.  Including Ugly stick Tigers, Fenwick, Daiawa, E-Cat, Big Cat, Ugly Sitck Catfish, Surge, Whisker Seeker and others ... Heck, I even have a couple of Bullhead specific set-ups.
 
Anyway, Back on point, I have been using Wisker Seeker stuff for quite some time now. And I can say, one of my favorite cat rods is a casting version of the rod cookie is holding - last year one of my best cats came on that rod paired with that very same orange line in 20 lb test.  The good reviews are pretty accurate in my experience. 

I always fish mono for catfish and typically use a 20/25 lb shock leader for channels (generally use braid for other applications.).  I find that the mono line in 15 and 20 lb test does cast well off my round reels (Haven't tried it on a spinning reel).  The orange Braid also works well on casting reels as well as spinning gear. 

Since that company focuses on Catfish, thier product line has been quite well tested and recieved by the catfish community - and I can confirm that eveything for rods to line to tackle that I have gotten from them (a fair collection I might add) performs as expected - as long as it is used effectively. By the way,  in Utah you don't need the same kind of rod or tackle to catch the Channels that people need where I grew up to catch Blues or Flatheads.

I predict you and cookie will not be disappointed with what could be otherwise called "hard to have overkill". Sometimes its better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Cant remember if I told you, but we use to live in Alabama for a few years. Got the pleasure of fishing the Santee- Cooper lake chain a few times for big blues. I still have two of the poles we used. They are beasts for rods and they small compared to what our friends had. I do miss the 40lb plus runs by big blues.


You need to break out them whiskerseekers and join Cookie and I for a little bait dunking this spring.
