Chicks Who Fish, Pulling together women Anglers!

Hello Dara,
I saw your letter in "The Chum Line" in South Coast Sportfishing this month, and in answer to your question (although I'm sure it was rhetorical, I just wanted to show my support).

There's NOTHING wrong with being a Chick who fishes!!

[laugh] How about a good laugh?
http://www.bigfishtackle.com/comics.htm

Mike H

I being a lady angler think it is great that you have a club for ladies. We need more resources for ladies.I am a proud member of the Southbay Lady Anglers. Yes we have commadre and lots of fun.We have grown to be the largest womens club in Southern Ca. When I read the article in chum line I had to agree with the first article. No offense to you Dara or The Chicks Who Fish.It has been my experiance that women have fought a long battle to be equals on the rail and on boats.I really dont want the stigma Chicks.I remember one of my first trips six years ago getting on a party boat with seven other women and hearing the groans and comments about needing to be at home with the rest of the wives and girlfriends. This is a mans sport and they came on the boat to get away from women. Yes, all of us ladies had to fight for the rail especially when we had fish on and they didnt .They refused to move and allow us to follow our fish. However when one's reel broke and it was us ladies offering them our gear they realized that we too were just fishing for fun and commadre. I think that the name Chicks just doesnt give women enough respect. These are my personal feelings and I wanted to share them.
Naomi

Hello Noami,
Great job at Miles Square Kids Derby, it was a smashing success, we had a blast!!!!!!

I would agree that the SouthBay Lady Anglers have and continue to do a lot to further the sport of fishing as well as further build respect for Lady Anglers. You and The Southbay Lady Anglers definitely have a lot to be proud of!!!

Noami, I see the name chicks as light hearted and fun, not as having a stigma. Most of the reasons you site for not appreciating the name "chicks" are based on the ignorance of insecure "male" fisherman not based on the actions or association of "chicks".

Given your perception of the word "chicks" and given your goal to further women in fishing, it would seem to me that the best course of action for Southbay Lady Anglers would be to whole heartedly support these women "chicks" realizing that with ever stride they also make in the sportfishing arena it is another great step for women getting their due recognition in the sport of fishing.

Men anglers have many many clubs with playful, light hearted, names that aren't particularly flattering to men as a whole, shouldn't women be able to enjoy the same luxury?

Different clubs appeal to different people and the more clubs we have the stronger the future of fishing for our children will be.

I applaud both the Southbay Lady Anglers and Chicks Who Fish and perhaps the bigger message in all of this is for all the men who do "groan and make comments when a women gets on a party boat", and who do "refuse to move and allow women to follow their fish". To them I say ("IF YOUR NOT PART OF SOLUTION YOUR PART OF THE PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE OF FISHING").

[laugh] How about a good laugh?
http://www.bigfishtackle.com/comics.htm

Mike H

Mike

I personally am glad there is another resource for women that fish. Yes, I am totally for fishing clubs especially one 's that are geared toward women. I am sure that all the Southbay Lady Anglers whole heartedly support Dara and The Chicks Who Fish. I do. I was not putting down Dara or The Chicks Who Fish.

I was merely adding my two cents in about the "chum line" in Southcoast Sportfishing.I am guessing that Sara Conners who ever she is was also talking about the stigma associated with "chicks".

Naomi

Naomi,
I have to say my peace on this subject! You have some good points and some anglers may disagree,But I feel that an angler is an angler, period. Gender has no berring in the facts. It was my mother that gave me my first pole and taught me how to use it. It was not my father as every one would expect. There might be different physical requirements for different genders. but the same goes for diffrent Phyzike. IE: Higth and weight. there are men that are under 5' and men over 300lb. What point I am trying to make is that only physical and mental conditions affect an anglers abuility to perform the art of fishing. So the next time you run in to one of thoes coments, don't walk away. Take them on with a chalange at fishing. You got all you need to show them that gender has no berring of the ability to fish. I made a post on the art of fishing last month. Any one that applys the three steps in that post can do nothing but grow in every thing they do.
Again the mind and physical condition of someone is the only thing that controls ability, not gender.

Texas Gulf Coast Fisher
<A HREF="http://"http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/ROSS6959"" target="_new">http://"http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/ROSS6959"

Hello Naomi,
Glad you added your thoughts. You are certainly entitled to that opinion and as hard as you and your organization have worked to further the sport of fishing and fishing for women. I definitely respect your opinion.

[laugh] How about a good laugh?
http://www.bigfishtackle.com/comics.htm

Mike H

Well put Dara, I admit it is a hard job to get recognised as a lady angeler. But don't count all of us guys out. Some of us look for the great skills of another angler to learn from without gender involved. I have spent many of fishing outings getting my tail whooped by a lady angler. I have learned that an angler is an angler.
An anglers skill is based on their abilitys not their gender.
My point is that there is some of us guys that are hear to help all anglers irregardless of gender.
From my reserch I already know to ware extra britches if I ever get the privlage to fish against you. Your skills will blow my first pair away. I hope some day I get that chance so I have the opertunity to learn from your abilitys.

Texas Gulf Coast Fisher
<A HREF="http://"http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/ROSS6959"" target="_new">http://"http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/ROSS6959"

Come on ladies, give it a rest. This is my personal view on this subject. Women have been exploiting themselves since day one. We have playboy bunnies, penthouse girls, strippers, bongo girls, etc. Women have used themselves for personal gains by displaying their bodies and batting their eyelashes throughout every type of sporting event; so why not fishing. Sometimes things are misinterpreted, I think Dara's "Chicks Who Fish" started out by her wanting a cute name for a club, I don't think she intended to discredit or offend any of us serious lady anglers. If her club members want to be stereo-typed in this manner, then more power to them for knowing what they want. If you as a lady angler don't want to receive the hoops and hollers I suggest when someone says something offensive to you… shut 'em down. Demand the same respect they would give their own daughter, mother or grandmother. But also remember, try not to send out an invitation (short shorts, low cut tops, etc.) on open party trips unless you are willing to play the game and face the consequences. The world is full of crazy people and I have seen my share on party boats.

If any of you ladies are interested in joining the South Bay Lady Anglers, please contact me. I can assure you that all our charters are safe and fun.

Thanks.

Darlen Lee
Proud Member of the South Bay Lady Anglers

Since every other lady angler with internet access has shared their opinion, now it's time to share mine. It is great to see an increasing number of ladies out there getting into the sport. It doesn't matter who you're affiliated with. If you carry yourself in a way that commands respect, then you'll get the respect that you deserve (just like in the rest of the world). Nobody is claiming to be better than anybody else. In fact, it seems that both groups are encouraging each other to fish hard, and fish often...and that's great! I don't know Dara or any Chicks Who Fish, but if they would like to be addressed as "chicks," then that's their choice. The bottom line is that we are all in these groups because of a common interest. So let's keep it at that and go fishing!!

-Stefanie
South Bay Lady Angler
